Retaining Walls

Ok, we are installing more retaining walls and have been using rockwood's products. I like many things about them, but haven't installed any of the other brands. I have a repeat customer that wants a "Celtic" wall built. Rockwood has introduced one, but it isn't available in my area.

What are the pros-and-cons of the different types. Time installing and strength is important(should go without saying). Also this wall will be 30-36 inches average height. So geogrid and soil stability will not be an issue on this one in particular. Thanks Guys.

Celtik Wall has two heights of blocks and each comes in several widths. This allows the use of a certain block as a jumper.
The blocks are stabilized with a clip system. Double check that the holes in the block are true and accept the clips. Sometimes if the manufacturer is using worn molds, the holes are defective.

If you're using Rockwood's Classic 6 or Classic 8 and have made corners and steps, then you'll be ready to build just about anything - I've found their system to be one of the more tricky to install.

no steps or corners yet, I have read in depth into them I believe we can handle them though, I'm sure it will be slow. The last 2 walls we built joined a basement on a 45 degree. We had to notch the blocks joining the house wall to make a tight fit, as well as adjust the setback of the walls(per rockwoods specs) so our wall would line up with the basement wall. We are going back to this job tomorrow to lay 30 pallets of sod, I will try and remember the camera and post some pics of this.

As for the other brands of wall, which do you reccomend for the celtic type wall. I am not set on one particular type, but the rockwood supplier I have is very competitive on pricing. They just don;t have the celtic type yet.

Do you have Techo-bloc in your area? Thier quarry stone block comes in 4" and 8" and can be combined like celtik wall from Belgard.

Celtik wall is the name given to Belgard's line of retaining wall.
Around here we've used Versa - lok mosaic ( tended to be a little wobbly, even with the pins), Keystone Country Manor ( Looks good for residential work and the cap system beats all the other caps we've used because of the different sizes ) , Celtik Wall ( looks good, easy to install, but can't go too high ) & Anchor Highland Stone which is what we predominately use nowadays.
No pins or clips, just a back lip system and you can still use geo-grid if needed. Only comes in 6" right now but they told me last year that they were close to a 3" block like Celtik wall.
Since you're from the NC area, you should be able to find plenty of Anchor Wall dealers.

I agree that the Anchor Highland wall material is attractive and easy to work. I've noticed a difference in the color blending from different mfg. plants even though the basic colors used are the same. Some are more streaky and others more blended.

ok I am starting this wall tomorrow or monday depending on how fast the other work progresses.

We are going to use versa-lock's mosiac wall.
I have done considerable reading and my customer selected this wall from several options.

I will follow this up after we complete.

as for the pictures I promised, well my digital camera works so well from the house. LOL

I see you are in the retaining wall business. I have to write a paper on any type of retaining wall or any thing having to do with landscape constrution mechanics. By any chance can you help me on a topic to write about. Can you get a lot of information on out door grills. You can email me at marcdhj@netscape.com

I installed my first versa-lok mosaic wall last year.....and my last! What I found is, by the time you get a antiqued fixture and then buy all the freakin' 33 cent pins needed for each panel (because of the design, each panel requires 8 -10 pin) you are pretty much at the same price as a nicer wall block (at least nicer in my eyes) such as techo.

we are 90% on the wall and it was twice as fast as the rockwood. As for pricing the materials were almost double the cost of rockwood, but I believe we saved the difference in labor and time.

Our materials came in about $9.75/sq ft

well the customer doubled the wall size so, time to rp off the last cap and dig some more footers. The finished wall looks great.

here is one, the wall appears to be unlevel in this picture, but the entire wall is level, I guess the bed height rising makes that illusion, the customer insisted on not stepping up but like it is.
