to charge or not to charge????

what do some of u guys think.....

we are finishing up a landscape for a really nice family. the kind you would like to work for every day. no problems........... except today. project calls for a total 24 ton of red lava stone, which customer picked out. 2 of my 6 wheelers showed up and dumped in the empty lot next door. my guys started spreading soon after i get a call from the customer.......they don't like the way the stone looks, and i have to agree doesn't look that great. the project was proposed at 35k ended up at 39k after add-ons (fire pit in paver patio and what not) we are also contracted to landscape a new restaurant they're opening first of spring.so do i charge them for the pick up of stone and and the 1-2 plus ton of lava mixed with dirt from the empty lot, or not.i can certainly absorb the costs. not 1 hitch during construction until now.I'm afraid of the bad taste this charge may leave in their mouth. what do ya think should i charge em?b

Charge. Possibly a reduced rate for such a good client but charge nonetheless.

At least charge to cover your costs and dinner for you and
your family. Can you use the rocks at the restraunt somewhere?

They picked the stone - they eat it if they decide they don't like it.

If the stone that was delivered looks like the stone that they picked out (no quality/color variation issues), then they need to understand that getting rid of the stone will incur a charge for pick up, hauling and whatever 'restocking fee' your stone yard charges. I'm sure that you'll handle them in a very sympathetic manner and try to make the next choice feel like a 'win' for them.
Good luck.

If you "have to agree" that the quality does not look like the rock they saw in the yard, make it right with them. You'll have a customer for life. Life!

Though this situation should be a charge of one type or another, the stone is different than what they saw, at least in their own mind. Tough call, but I think I would have to at least try to get some money for the time involved.

Personally, I'm on a rock mulch is disgusting no matter how it looks kick, so I would try to get them looking at some type of wood mulch.

leave the stone on the job and abandon the job. run like he*l, just kidding. BE FAIR. I am sure you can work something out, but if these are reasonable people the they will expect a charge for the change. but I would be modest in the charge.
