cement drive cut out

hey guys, new 2 this forum. have found it useful. full of very intelliget & professional thoughts and ideas. no playin around here.for that said my $20 is in the mail.

anyway my problem is i have a costumer who has a driveway that cracked then heaved. its about a 80sq ft. he wants me 2 cut out the flaw and put in pavers. i wouldnt think of ever doin this.
its a small pita job i would rather go full tilt like rip out the drive.
but this is what he wants. and has spent many a dollar with me landscaping. and is a regular at my retail garden center.

(1) do i cut exactly the size of the pavers. or do i not worry about the size of the cutout and cut the pavers.

(2) what saw 2 use will a cutoff work. will this even look ok? never done this. any ideas or suggestions would be a great

Dan:

Welcome! this is th best landscape place on the web for sure. I uased to live near New Lenox, what a boom town these days! What I would do is estimate the space the pavers will take up on the drive, in other words, how wide, how wide....Then, with pavers on site, lay one course of the pattern on top of the drive until you have spanned the cracked area. Do this on both sides of the drive. Lay a straight 2x4 across the drive and mark the line to saw, or if you want to use a string snap line, do that....By doing it that way, you will save time over cutting each paver, and honestly, that looks better in my opinion....Now if you want to upsell the job, you could ask him what he thought about banding the drive with pavers so it looks like something more intentional rather than a random patch as you are describing.

Stonehenge is on a distinguished road
To build on what Bill said, maybe even a strip across the middle of the drive that also contains the area you're removing might add character, instead of looking hodge-podge.

A cut-off saw will work, but you'll have to be careful where you're cutting out a corner within the slab. Just cut to the corner, dropping the blade as deep as it'll go. Gently hammer near that corner with a 2# hammer, or maybe a small sledge. Pull the piece out, then clean up the corner using the blade as a grinder (or better yet, use a grinder).

Welcome to the site, and good luck with this project.

You can get a saw mounted on a cart at any rental outfit and that'll help with accuracy if they are long cuts. (Plus save your back!)
