In our particular situation, because the geniouses who designed the storm water overflow system, if we dump dirt on the street for any reason we face a $10,000.00 fine. that's because the idiots dump it directly into the deep blue Pacific, and claim that silt will kill fish. When I started adding up how many trailers we would need to go the dump trailer route, we can buy 3 roll off boxes for every trailer.

Insurance rates on a hook/roll off will initially cost you dearly. Where a dump truck runs $1,500.00 a year, a roll off truck, class 8, runs $5,000.00 per year. After you get another truck, it only increases $800.00 or so, and continued to go up for each unit.

Now, there is something you can try...Simply don't class your hook lift as a roll off, call it a dump truck. Unless your policy has a specific exclusion for a particular truck, your covered.

Bill,

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping to get the dirt on your new truck.

What kind of milage does a truck like that get? My '93 international with an AT545 averages around 9 miles per gallon with no overdrive. I have yet to hear how the newer Allison transmissions do.

All,

My thoughts on a hook lift/roll off are that you can use them like a regular dump day in and day out. However, when you want to leave a container on the jobsite you have that option. I have seen guys carrying skid steers in them as well, such as the fellah in this thread.

I don't believe I would hook and unhook the box daily on a truck like this. However, I would hook and unhook it atleast once a week.

I have suppliers to deliver topsoil, process, gravel etc. Hauling heavy loads has never been my concern. Getting the last four or five yards of topsoil, getting rid of a mountain of garbage, having room to carry a heap of plants, that is my concern for a truck.

Further, I MUST have a better system for carrying tools. My current truck has way too little storage, and I consider a backpack a neccesity on my next truckl.

Please keep the opininions on hook lifts and roll offs coming. Every little bit of info helps!

Hook lifts are a bit more money than a Rolloff but not much i just priced out a 65,000 lb for a triaxle and it is only 4,000 more. I like hook lifts because you can run a shorter truck which means a short WB and you do not have to get out to hook the cable. Hookl fit boxes cost the same as rolloff boxes But mostly you do not have the rails sticking 3-4 ft past the truck. All the rolloff guys claim they have these overbuilt trucks able to pull 70,000 The only problem is you would be about 15,000 overweight. No debris boxes weigh near that even a 20 cy concrete boxes only 50,000 lbs. Hook lifts are the only trucks used in Europe here in the US we use rolloffs and that what we are used too. With a hook lift you can run a pintel hitch to pull a trailer not sure if you can do it with a rooloff.
