Any tips for driving an Mini-X down a steep slope?

We're going to be doing some retaining wall and patio work in a backyard that has some slope along the sides to get to it.

I'm thinking of just driving forward, using the extended arm as a balance as I go down the hill.

How safe is this? Any other tips or tricks to make this happen safely?

Not really safe but it works. The trouble is that if things start to get out of shape the bucket digs into the ground and then the hoe pivots around it and you roll. Might be better to back down with hoe extended. If you start to lose it drop the bucket into the ground to hold yourself. What ever you do, belt yourself in, and if you lose it keep your arms and legs in the machine. With these small machines there is a natural tendency to stick out an arm or leg to keep it from tipping. All that does is hurt and it still tips.

When I load a mini-ex onto a trailer I usually find It most comfortable to have the hoe downhill especially when going over the hump. I believe the counterweight end would be considered the heavy end of an excavator and generally the heavy end should be uphill when traveling on slopes.

Bucket and blade on the down hill side, counter weight is up hill, I keep the blade low and travel in a straight line. Don't try going sideways!

That sounds like good advice. What about chaining it to a trailing skid steer? Any advantages or disadvantages to that?

I like going up steep slopes with arm extended uphill and dozer blade on the downhill side almost touching.

Also, I've found having the bucket filled with dirt gives even better counter balance.

Just be careful. When you panic, one of the first reactions is to drop the arm to the ground. When the arm is exteded fully uphill, and you are on a steep, steep slope, you actually push yourself over when the bucket hits.

Post a photo if you tip it, won't you.

Good luck.

Can't add any better advice.

Provided my arms still work afterward, yes I will.
