towing trailer

I am in the process of setting up another crew- just purchased a new chevy2500HD 2wd w/6 liter v8, work truck. The truck is rated to tow over 10,000 lbs. I am a bit hesitant to tow anything close to 10,000 lbs with a pickup truck- only because I know how a pickup truck handles with a heavy trailer.

My partner, on the other hand, thinks it isn't a problem to tow a 8' wide x 20' long trailer with this truck. The trailer + load would probably be averaging 7000-8000 lbs, occasionally maxed out to 10,000 lbs.

Any opinions from you guys who haul large trailers with your pickup?

I will tow it, but not safely.
That is a wide and long trailer for that pickup unless you use a gooseneck

You have some variables to decide: distance towed, what is being towed, load balance, etc. I have a 3/4-ton Ford with a fifth spring, which puts it at about a 12,500 pound rating. I routinely pull a 3K dump trailer with 7-8K skidsteer at distances up to 50 miles, and I have yet to have a problem. Granted, you start getting 20ft long, and things start to change. But not that much. Before I got the dump trailer I had a 20' utility trailer. The main thing was balancing the load. I could really tell if I didn't have a tractor or skid on there just right. As long as everything is chained down, bolted on and double-checked, I wouldn't worry about it. You may want to check your State's DOT for restrictions.

my mowing enclosed trailer is 20x7 and I pull it with a gm 2500hd. It does fine. I think a bigger truck would do better but it does just fine as it is.

I agree. I pull a dump trailer with track loader on it sometimes that is 10-11k with no problem as long as I'm careful. Trailer (and truck) needs to have good breaks. Load has to be well balanced. In another life I used to pull 8x24 box trailers around San Fransisco with F250s and that was fine.
