We have had the by far best results with root injecting a liquid organic fertilizer. Beyond that things like having loose, fertile soil for the roots to grow out into (not just in the planting hole) and frequent watering are key. Also don't stake them if you don't have to and if you do get them off after the first season, two at the most.

Obviously depends on what kind of trees and the location for the details.
