You have some variables to decide: distance towed, what is being towed, load balance, etc. I have a 3/4-ton Ford with a fifth spring, which puts it at about a 12,500 pound rating. I routinely pull a 3K dump trailer with 7-8K skidsteer at distances up to 50 miles, and I have yet to have a problem. Granted, you start getting 20ft long, and things start to change. But not that much. Before I got the dump trailer I had a 20' utility trailer. The main thing was balancing the load. I could really tell if I didn't have a tractor or skid on there just right. As long as everything is chained down, bolted on and double-checked, I wouldn't worry about it. You may want to check your State's DOT for restrictions.
