Agla, I think you are thinking of gumball types, and as far as I know, that is just liquidambers that are topiaried.
I have never heard of sweet gums doing that kind of damage, I have one planted about 10 feet from my foundation and it has not caused any damage, at least not yet.

I just looked them up in SWG book and it does warn of their habit of cracking sidewalks with surface roots, but are still a good street tree if given ample space.
