I like renting from the places where there's a cranky mechanic who gives the instructions on using the equipment.
He's cranky because he's seen how the equipment can be (ab)used, and doesn't want to have to fix the same thing for the 11th time.
He also seems to know every machine inside and out, and can diagnose most problems by phone.
Tricky, I bet the sod cutter there was used to strip asphalt - I know that was true of one from one of the local rental yards here. There are some real brain trusts using this rental equipment, so unless they have a good, experienced mechanic (not a one day Home Depot "certification"), their stuff will probably always be broken.
