One tip would be to eliminate the need - run a soldier course at each corner radiating outward from the pool.
You can also employ a palm laser - some are better than others and can make a visible line on the ground for a good distance - you could use the laser as a guide for some chalk lines.
And don't be stingy with the chalk - snap 50 lines around the pool if you need to.
