control the weeds first or reseed?

Hi everyone!

You dont get much input from me as I am very new to the business compared to the rest of you. However, I am here everyday.. reading and absorbing all of the information I can. THIS SITE IS ADDICTIVE. Hopefully one day I can pass on some knowledge.

On to my problem: A HYDROSEEDED AREA WERE THE GRASS IS SPARCE AND THE WEEDS ARE STARTING TO TAKE OVER

Attatched is a photo of a problem site I hydroseeded last yr. (

I know.. it looks really bad.. not my usual results) The problem is a result of several factors ...

1. the home owner preped the site themselves and as you can see alot of weeds were imported with the topsoil

2. we had an unusually HOT and DRY spring/summer/fall

3. the homeowner didnt water as much as I would have liked for such weather conditions

Anyway .. I am back to fix the problem...the grass is sparce and the weeds are taking over.

I have asked the advice of 2 ppl and both have different suggestions:

The "weed man" tells me to re hydroseed first... as it is too early to spray weed control because the summer weeds have not yet started to grow..

The "horticultural specialist" tells me to control the weeds first while they are still young, small and soft.

If I hydroseed first .. I would have to scalp the grass and weeds as short as possible. But, the homeowner wont be able to cut the newly seeded area for at least 3 weeks.. so wont the weeds totally take over by then? and .. I will also be fertalizing the weeds as well as the grass seed if I hydroseed first.

Who's advice should I take?

p.s. i wasnt able to submit the photo as it says "the file it tried to attach is too big" how do I compress it?
