There is a herbicide that is used for grass growing in myrtle, unfortunately I don't remember it's name... but it does exist.
And the key with myrtle is to only use it in shady areas where it does not have to compete with the myriad of weeds that need sun. It's simply not dense enough to shade out those weeds.
