Liner for formal water feature

I've just started the excavation for the patio at my house, which among other things will include a formal water feature. This formal water feature will be sitting on a thick slab of concrete, and retained by mortared limestone on the outside.

I'm wondering if I can/should use a liner other than our usual 45 mil EPDM for this pond. For reference, on top of the liner I also plan to mortar tiles, or more stone, or something, so that you don't see any liner at all.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance.
