I've never had the chance to try to seam old liner to new, but have seamed two new pieces of EPDM. The only hard part is keeping the wrinkles out of a long run.
When we do it I like to double-seam it - one piece of the 4" double stick stuff sandwiched between the two pieces, then another on top, straddling the edge of the top piece. We then put a strip of liner over that, just to cover up the sticky side on top.
For an old piece, I might use a mild detergent, and then just make sure everything is warm and dry.
